Description
This cast is fairly large but is also compact with large flat chambers at the bottom so I was able to mount it right side up. That usually isn't the case with the larger fire ant colony casts which are long and need to be displayed upside down. The colony near the surface is mostly interconnected tunnels but deeper in the colony are many pad-like chambers, some of which are a few inches wide. Most of the cast is below ground portion of the colony but some of the structure of the surface mound was captured, but not all of it.
Base Description
The cast is displayed in its natural orientation and sits on three square wood risers attached to a wood base. The base is basswood stained with Watco Danish Oil Dark Walnut with no a clear coat. It has a natural finish look to it. There are three 1" square wood risers which support the cast in its proper orientation. There is no mounting between the cast and the base so the cast can be taken off the base and held easily. The bottom of the base has four felt pads to protect the surface it is displayed on. A stainless steel plaque is mounted on the cast containing information about it.
