This is a cast of a fire ant colony which also had rodent tunnels running through it. So much aluminum went into the rodent tunnels that there wasn't much aluminum left to cast the actual colony. So, I didn't capture much of the ant colony itself. I still find it very interesting. I'm not sure if the ant colony was there first or the rodent tunnels, but I'm guessing that the ants came first and the rodents tunneled though it after it was abandoned. I say "rodents" because I'm not exactly sure what animals dug these tunnels but I do see a lot of ground squirrels around so that's what I suspect. It's extremely massive at 22.4 lbs and 27" at its widest. The rodent tunnels are around 1.5" min diameter on average but are several inches wide at some points. The longest tunnel
on the right is around 15" long. The fire ant colony structure
that you see is the part of the colony that was about 1 ft. underground, there wasn't enough aluminum to fill the chambers above that.
